POSITIVE GEARING is when the rental income you receive from your investment property is greater than the expenses associated with having the property, including mortgage payments, interest and maintenance. This means you may need to pay tax on your income.
NEGATIVE GEARING is when the costs of owning a property are higher than the rental income you receive. Because you are making a loss, you may be able to reduce your taxable income by this amount. This is called a ‘negative gearing strategy’.
